Superstar Apprentices at Hair Expo 2010

This past long weekend, Hair Expo was held in Sydney. Hair Expo is the biggest hairdressing event in the Southern Hemisphere, so to say it is a big deal is a bit of an understatement. Four of our apprentices: Raquel, Stephen, Jake and Naomi, competed in the Apprentice Cutting Competition onstage. ONSTAGE. This means that they planned their haircuts and had been practising for about 6 weeks, and on the day they arrived at 8.30am for the 10am start of the competition. This year there were 25 competitors from salon all over Australia, and the whole of the Stevie English team were in the audience to cheer on our future superstars!

Needless to say they all did us very proud. The haircuts were spectacular, the styling perfect and our youngest team members were absolutely brilliant onstage. Nerves, scissors, blowdryers and a very big day for the Stevie English apprentices. Well done guys!

Hair to The Rescue!

Unless you have been living under a rock, you would have heard about the biggest oil disaster in US history that is currently destroying the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding areas. The BP deep sea oil rig Deepwater Horizon blew up, sank, and now the well it was drilling is gushing crude oil into the ocean at a rate of 12000 barrels a day, and has been doing so for more than 30 days.

When things like this happen, it is difficult to see a way to help. We live so far away, and disaster is so enormous that there is little else to do but despair. Fortunately for hairdressers, there is a way we can be of practical use. Human hair, along with animal hair & nylon pantyhose, is used to create booms which absorb oil. We are collecting all the hair we can and sending it to the Gulf through an organisation called Matter of Trust, where it will be made into mats which will suck up some of the toxic sludge.

We can't stop the leak, and our 5 boxes of hair won't save an entire school of fish, but we are doing what we can to help, and have called on our friends in the industry to do the same. Every little effort counts!

Ksubi, RAFW 2010

Ksubi, one of the most famous clothing labels here in Australia, it's the hipsters choice. When Verity said she was going to be doing hair at Ksubi, all the staff were dying to assist. Ksubi is cooler than cool, and as they have not shown in a few years there was a lot of buzz and excitement around the show.
The hair brief was "Centre part, everyone had their hair extended with wefts (fake hair) and cut straight" and if you have seen models hair you know that's hard! Went with a geometric, sixties vibe. "28 models, not enough time to prep hair, HELL WITH THE LID OFF!!" said a very tired but clever Verity. Some times the most simple looks can be some of the hardest to pull off.
Verity was just one of the team directed by Jon Pulitano.

Hair and Sharks

Hairy sharks don't normally go, I've never seen one, nor do I want to but...
Stevie English is proud to support Dead Sharks ain’t Art, an arts event and auction raising funds to stop all forms of shark slaughter.

As an environmentally friendly salon, we are concerned by the fact that threatened and endangered sharks are killed for their fins off the coast of Australia in huge numbers. Already 90% of the world’s sharks have been wiped out.

To show our support, we have donated some hair cut and blow dry appointments for the live and silent auction. Other major prizes include specially commissioned artworks and a weekend for two scuba diving.

If you would like to join us on Tuesday please RVSP below, entry is free and drinks and nibbles will be provided. All money raised will go towards the NCC’s work for the greater protection of sharks and their habitat.

Camilla & Marc Oz spring/summer 2010

Quite often in fashion shows, doing hair for 20 models in a short time can be rather challenging, so the hair is kept quite simple. For the Camilla & Marc show it was "dry textured, rough, and with a low pony". A ponytail can be the undoing of a hairdresser, it is not as easy as it looks, especially done well! I have seen many a hairdresser struggle to do perfect one, and with added time constraints it's tough work! ) Thankfully Verity, Kirsty and Jade are wizards at this and to have them passing on this knowledge to younger staff is great for our future, and Stevie English Hair.

Seventh Wonderland Australian Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

So This week in Sydney is Rosemount Australian Fashion Week, and Verity and Raquel are out of the salon working on shows. We are going to be giving Verity's tips on how she created the looks for designers over the next few days. Most of it is going to be for the hairdressing nerds, but hey, we like to keep you informed. At The English: "Knowledge is Power".

These photos here are from the Seventh Wonderland show. "Hair was heavily gelled and section by section, working from the nape to the forehead, it was smoothly wrapped back and forth against the head. Front sections directed forward and then swept up and back in the crown sections. The very front/top sections were sculpted wet onto the face and flowed around the sides and onto the neck. The finished look was wet, modern, 20's/50's skull bathing cap. Was really beautiful with the swimwear",said Verity.

Australian Fashion week 2010 And Hair

We are often asked to do shows and events, we have loads of things on this year and half the staff are going to be out doing shows during Fashion Week-the first week in May. But the first cab off the rank so to speak was Kirsty who was Hair Director for Justine Davis. Justine has been a fan of ours for awhile and we are huge fans of hers. Kirsty was up for many nights creating lots of hair pieces for Justine's models and looks. I know it was a big day with 5 strand braids and a young team from the English to help. Great work Kirsty.

We try to help our local community whenver possible. We often offer free haircuts to the local schools as raffle prizes, and another charity we like to promote is the Wheelie Warriors. It's a group who offer motorbike rides to kids in wheel chairs, they are awesome and it's great for the kids.

It's official: Verity Griffths is the BEST Makeup Artist in Australia!! Look -she is holding a big shiny award to prove it. I have never doubted mind you, Verity is a talent, and she needs no award to confirm that. She is a finalist for Hair Expo Session Stylist of the Year as well! Which will be judged in june, so watch this space.
Last night at the AHFAs at Sydney Town Hall I watched Verity take out the award and give a lovely speech, will also point out that she was the first person to swear up on stage. Its amazing to watch people you work with, who work really hard get proper recognition for all their hard work. Well done V you potty mouth.

Hair For Justine Davis

Kirsty was up at 3am for the Justine Davis, look book shoot. Justine is going from strength to strength and it's always awesome to work with her. Kirsty used a wig, which she carefully cut and styled- I think almost everyone in the salon wore it while she tried to cut it because was doing it in- between clients!

The Original&Mineral Shoot

You know the coolest thing about working at Stevie English Hair? I work with my friends, the guys in the salon rock we have such a cool team! Another friend for us is O&M Original Mineral who are our main product company. It was such an honour to be asked to be in charge of hair for the new hero shots for their cool products. Original&Mineral are a mega cool Australian owned product company who believes in doing things their way. Their brand is modern, cool and image is everything! Stevie English is proud to be a part of their vision and are really happy to help inspire fashions.
The two day shoot comprised of one day in the studio and one day down the south coast in the National Park at a beach called Garie. The photographer was David Mandelberg. David is a world class photographer and it was amazing to be around him and his team. He was shooting both stills and moving image. The model was Annabella Barber,we have worked with Annabella before shooting for culture magazine, to say she is the real deal is an understatement. An awesome model who not only looks great but has the most incredible work ethic. For all of those that think models just look good and have great bone structure, genetics handed them a full house.............. TRUE, but they work hard. Annabella was a complete pro, and the shoot was quite demanding. Our Verity ran the hair department: I coloured Annabella's hair whilst Verity and our assistants Raquel, Jake and Naomi all worked on keeping the hair looking clean, contemporary and cool with a slight 60's feel with an organic natural edge. We did two very long fourteen hour days and lots my mates joke that is very glamorous, well getting up at 4am in the cold of the morning, and then the heat of the mid-day sun, is not all that its cracked up to be!But I'm not complaining, we all had a great time and the final shots will be just perfect. Great work from everyone involved!

Training: Hair Up Sydney Style with a Stevie English twist.

We put on a little training night for all our staff and some of the team from Muse hairdressing in Surry Hills. Kirsty, Jade and Verity all did hair ups and they all did different kinds. Kirsty showed what she called an 'easy' hair up, I beg to differ, it was a lot of very cool braids. Jade did a more traditional hair up with a modern twist using a hair piece/padding which was really cool. And Verity showed us a more editorial look using all hair pieces. It's so great to see our talented staff working and sharing their knowledge.

We truly love all our clients here at Stevie English, and it is awful to turn them away because they can't get the appointment they need. We are getting busier all the time, and it is hard to find appointments with only a few days' notice. If you want to keep your fabulous style looking perfect- RE-BOOK!

Oscars 2010 Hair Report

The Oscars. Dresses. Glamour. HAIR. So who did we love?

Sandra Bullock: The Golden Girl. Beautiful, sleek, glossy brunette hair. She looked perfect, and she won! Does not really get any better for her.

Sarah Jessica Parker: The Risk Taker. Say what you will about her dress, but I loved her hair. The huge hairpiece is so dramatic, and you got to give her props for not being boring. I would have smoothed the front a little, but maybe it was windy!

Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz: The Old-Hollywood Glamour Girls. Long, blonde, cascading waves over one shoulder. It's a Hollywood classic, and both of these gorgeous women worked it beautifully.

Meryl Streep: The Class Act. She just gets better and better. Her simple french roll accentuates her beautiful face. She is just impeccable.
The Oscars are never usually the place for crazy styles, but these looks were classic, beautiful and effective.

Stevie English Hair is known for, obviously, hair.We have talented staff who create great styles on clients and on models. We have not really advertised or we are not known for the great makeup we do. We have two makeup artists in the salon.Verity, our clever finalist, and Raquel. Raquel is learning to be a hairdresser, she's a skilled makeup artist, and she is the newest recruit to the academy. She has a keen eye and is fashion obsessed, which we love.

Verity has just shot some ads for Fashion Trend magazine, as well as just doing some moving image for an advert (watch this space.) We shot pics in the salon in the Stevie English Studio, which is upstairs.

You may notice they are not our normal eco-friendly O&M hair products, but don't worry- not changing product companies, it was just for this shoot. Looks good, cool hair and I think Verity was very happy with the male model... wonder why?!

New year, new beginnings! In 2010, this is especially true for Stevie English Hair. We had a very busy period running up to Christmas and New Year, not just keeping all our lovely clients' hair in festive perfection, but also doing some major renovations in the salon.
Last year I blogged about our plans for the year, and we talked about expanding into our upstairs area and the "Stevie English Academy". The rebuild is now in the final stages, and everyone is getting pretty keen to get upstairs and use the rad new space. We are also really keen on training some new members of the O&M family, we just can't get enough of these wonderful products and love spreading the word. But first, a sneak preview of the new upstairs salon/training academy. Of course there will be an official launch (ok I mean a party) soon, but until then....check it out!

Stevie English Hair turns 2

It's that time again- when Glebe Point Road turns into a party. Sunday the 15th is Glebe Street Fair! The salon will be open as usual, but for our lovely clients please leave a little earlier to find a park at the back. You won't be able to drive down most of Glebe Point Road, so take Bridge Road and turn into any back street behind the salon. There will be a lot of people around.

This weekend is also our Anniversary, we will be Two on Tuesday, which is an amazing achievement and what with winning the Business Awards and Georgie winning at Hair Expo this year has been very good!

Okay, so the Stevie English Hair team have set ourselves a new target as winning the business awards isn’t enough for this year already. Stevie Corthine has entered colourist of the year and Verity Griffiths and Kirsty Abbott have entered the Mens hairdresser of the year. I'm the salons saturday girl and i was lucky enough to hang around the guys and the shop and watch the shoots in progress.

It worked out that the salon had three shoots in a week, the salon was filled with a photographer and his assistants (Andrew Goldie). Make up artist’s, clothing and models. So amongst all this, and the constant flow of coffee the stylist's got to work tweaking and carrying out the finishing touches on the hair. This year men’s hair was kept reasonably short, sharp with distinctive angles. And both Kirsty and Verity was keeping the perimeters slightly shorter. And the range of women’s colouring was vast from a natural medium brown, to a fun, soft candyfloss pink for those who want to channel the half lady gaga, half sugar plum fairy look this summer Stevie told me he wants to see colours that the grey rinse set would rock but on young girls. All of the colours and styling products were supplied by the fabulous ammonia-free 0&M range.

For Kristy’s shoot, the theme was kept really casual and cool. Kirsty told me she wanted all her influences to come together in a melting pot, she loves long curly hair short spiky hair, im not sure if she just likes hot boys, i couldn't complain. All boys the had there own style and look and she tried to keep the theme using the light and the window. The clothing was supplied by Dana from Mawlai and Alvin from st augustine's academy

This year Verity was inspired by the whole true blood, twilight, gothic movement which is going on recently and wanted her shoot to reflect that. All boys were styled with messy yet hard-hitting hair, teamed with ripped jeans and lose baggy shirts. The whole shoot looked amazing. There was a lot of undercuts, and texture in the hair this year with the boys. Add a little eye-liner and you have a great collection, dark and inspiring.

Every aspect of these shots screams glamour. Stevie’s shoot was all about natural beauty, but bringing the blue Rinse brigade to the party the make up was kept minimal and all focus was on the hair. The collections influence was about Mrs Slocombe and her pals. Well thats what Stevie said i wasnt too sure what he was talking about, but thought every model, looked cool with their own colour which was coloured by Stevie, and they all pulled it of so well. All of the hairstyles were full of volume and texture with Verity Directing the styling. Coming into 2010, we are going to be seeing loads more volume in hair, so you can forget those straightners. The photo shoot's was my first and i thought they went really well, and I couldn't believe how hard it was to get one shot! the whole team worked so hard.

Great Mens Hair

Kirsty is in the salon today shooting a mens collection, and it got me thinking about men's hair styling. Long gone are the times when men would just go to barbers. We have a large male clientele, who enjoy coming into the shop for a great chat, a beer or two and of course a FANTASTIC haircut. We watch fashions, and we think the the male shape in hair is all about the exterior being shorter, with undercuts being an extreme example of this. Best Salon in Sydney!

WOW, We went one better than last year, and I have to say that I was completely speechless- well almost.
The City of Sydney Business Awards were held at the Sheraton on the
Park, and what a night. We were sitting with friends who were also nominated in our category- the owners of Suki, Sandy and her great husband , the lovely Bretts and Leonard who owns Desmond and Molly Jones, and Jasmin his lovely wife . It was an honor to be nominated and to be in such great company.
For us to win a business award is amazing and considering we have not made the two year mark even more incredible! I would like to thank all our clients who voted for us, and special thanks goes to the Stevie English team. I went and collected the award but its my team that won this, we have a lovely team who work together amazingly and I feel so lucky.
I never realised that success could be so much fun!

London and NY Style

I have just returned from a whirlwind visit to London and New York. I was lucky enough to be in London while Fashion Week was on, and just missed New York Fashion Week. But there was a lot to see, style and hair-wise, in both cities.

I'll start with London. The general street style in London is so eclectic and edgy that it's almost impossible to generalise. I saw some fantastic creative fashion during my short time there, and the hair is equally creative. The undercut, disconnected looks that are seen on celebs like Rihanna and Ruby Rose are big in London, as well as a newer trend for volume. On the catwalks during Fashion week, there were a lot of designers showing models with big, messy, backcombed hair. Long gone is the dead-straight, ironed-to-death hair. Volume is BACK which we know but in a serious styled down way, Kevin.Murphy has been leading the way.

I also noticed some punters working a combination of the two major trends- undercut and volume. A MAC makeup artist, who I didn't get a chance to photograph, had a brilliant afro with shaved sides. She looked absolutely amazing, and it was my favourite look from the whole trip.

I just missed New York Fashion week, but spent some time with a Bumble and bumble stylist who was still in town- John Ruggiero. New York is a buzz of energy and although John is based in L.A. he took time to show me some cool hair and how Bumble and bumble work.

I'm not sure what i was expecting from New York, what I got was a great city, loads of people and a real mix of cultures,and some interesting fashion. I was supposed to meet up with Vivienne MacKinder who has just been inducted to the American Hall of Fame but our schedules didn't quite match up. Hopefully I can interview her later in the year for prohairstylist .

Having spent time around London Fashion Week and then coming to New York I was expecting a similar fashion, but I left in love with New York but not with its fashion and hair.It was a little conservative for my taste and nothing really blew me away in the street, which was in contrast to London. I went all over NYC- Upper East Side, West Village, Greenwich Village, East Village, Lower East Side, Midtown, Brooklyn, everywhere! The style there is just not quite as edgy and cool as London. Don't get me wrong, everybody looks great, and there are millions of models in the city, but it just didn't set me on fire creatively. I guess I'll just have to go back to New York and have a closer look- any excuse to return is good enough for me! I <3 NY!

Watching Other Hairdressers Work

Last week I was lucky enough to be asked to fly to Melbourne to watch Chumba Concept Salons shoot with the rockstar photographer Andrew O’Toole. I arrived at the Ozdare Academy bright and early to meet Karl Keeley, artistic director for Chumba, and his talented team. They were: Belinda, Karl’s wife and a great colourist, Tanya, Marcus, Peter and Kate. And I was down in Melbourne to cover it for prohairstylist.

These guys are so amazingly prepared and organised, and it was a real pleasure to see their creative process from start to finish. It also made me realise how disorganised I can be, and how much smoother a shoot goes with proper preparation. Good storyboards and delegation makes all the difference. And don’t get me started on the technical skills- I watched Belinda colouring a model’s hair and was so impressed by her placement and toning ability.

Unless you have been living in Antarctica for the past 10 years, you have probably heard of Andrew O’Toole. He shoots a lot of hairdressing collections, from the UK to Australia. He definitely looks the part of the superstar photographer, but when I met him he was lovely. His team work really efficiently setting up lighting and it’s easy to see why he’s the best.

The magic happens on shoots when all the elements some together, and on this job it definitely did. Carls’ team did a beautiful job on the hair, Letitia Dare is an amazing stylist, Kylie O’Toole’s makeup was spectacular and the man Andrew behind the camera doing his thing- it was organised, but there was a great frenetic energy in the studio. I thing the secret is creativity and preparation, and the results were stunning!

Big thanks to the Chumba team for having me, to Andrew and Kylie O’Toole for chatting with me and giving me some great insights into their success. Can’t wait to see the final shots during the awards season this year!

How We Keep The Stevie English Team Inspired

On a windy Monday night, the Stevie English team headed to Slide bar in Darlinghurst, to see the latest creations from the Rokk Ebony team, who are Melbourne based.
We saw some amazing colour work, a cool undercut style and both these demonstrations sparked some inspiration for the team and refreshed ideas for our clients. The guys also showed us some different upstyle techniques and talked a lot about the culture within their salon.

The following night, the first day of spring, the team and I rocked across town to the new Muse salon, where we were completely blown away by the talent of Phillip Barwick,who is the artistic director for Redken and also a great friend. And he is PASSIONATE about hair so it was inspiring to be around him and hear him preach cutting. I pre-coloured a model, and Phillip just got in and just showed a huge array of cutting skills and the whole team were blown away. It's so great to spend time with other hairdressers to see how they do things, and to share all our knowledge with the next generation of stylists.

Hair Training With David Glover

Last week was another great one, and probably the highlight was having David Glover in the salon. David is one of the best session stylists in the world, he was crowned Austalian Session Stylist of the Year in 2007 and I recently interviewed him for Prohairstylist . So it was very nice of him to come into our little shop and impart some of his wisdom, styling tricks and how to use Kevin Murphy products- his way . He is Kevin.Murphy's golden boy, whilst you will notice this months Australian Vogue front cover hair is done by Kevin Murphy. David is doing the same in the states for the Kevin Murphy brand. He is head of education in the states and is styling in some of the biggest American mags going, as well teaching the yanks how to work hair the Australian way!
David showed us some great tips on how to put hair up quickly, things that would normally take up to 2 hours- he got it done in 10 mins, not including prep time. Pretty amazing,and it gives us better skills in styling hair and doing it quickly which is really good for us and you who come into the salon .
Would like to thank David for coming into the salon, all the team were talking about it all day and have been practising his very useful tips all week. So thank you David, you are a real talent.

We are just about recovered from our big weekend at Expo. With winning an award, doing stage work and interviewing the best Australian talent around for prohairstylist, it was busy, busy BUSY! There is an interview I did with Kirsten Reynolds and right hand man of Kevin.MurphyDavid Glover. It was a great experience, and loads of fun to chat to the best hairdressers Australia has to offer.
Whilst I was out chatting to people the girls were onstage as a part of the O&M creative team,styling hair for a shoot that was running. I helped a little, but all credit goes to Verity Griffths and Kirsty Abbott who are some of the best in Australia, as well as some of the best for Stevie English Hair. The Apprentice of the Year 2009

Wow! What a day, what a week, no what a year! Dramatic- that's me. I'm sitting here at my desk a very happy and proud man. My two super star apprentices have been working around the clock to get their models on stage at the Hair Expo apprentice competition. They were both amazing and pulled off two great hair cuts in 30 mins. Its hard to do a haircut under pressure let alone with an auditorium full of people watching. The next part of the competition was the 'hair up' section where they have 15 mins to put do an elaborate upstyle.

I was so nervous for them both that it was hard to watch. Naomi is in her second year, whilst Georgie is in her third, and they were both competing against people who are more senior.
To cut a long and proud story short Georgina Stokes WON the Australian Apprentice competition! She styled it herself, choosing clothes and having makeup done to her specifications. Georgie will be going up on stage to collect her award tomorrow night.

Naomi did so well, I pushed and prodded her to go in and her finished hair up and haircut were amazing. It's lovely to have a great talented team, the assistants are often the unsung hero's of the salon, and its fantastic to see them try so hard and get awarded. Well done to both my girls!

Curly Hair Expert

I have been working in hair salons for 17 years. I trained in London and specialised in colour. In all that time, in my short career in cutting, I was never really shown how to cut curly hair. And in all the amazing salons I have worked at, there was never someone that really stood out for cutting curly hair. It was a bit hit and miss, a client with curly hair would love it one cut and then say it was butchered the next. Until now.
The QUALITY of my staff is amazing. But I digress.They are all good at cutting hair and good at cutting curly hair.
Verity is leading the way in cutting curly hair. Verity has a mane of thick curly hair herself, and is doing things with curly hair that I have not seen before. The really cool thing is, the current trends for hair are moving away from straight, ironed hair back to a more natural look. So if you have curls, don't straighten them, come in and tame them. Work with the curl. That's what we are promoting. And Verity is sharing her passion, skills and knowledge with the rest of the team. Winner: Stevie English Hair clients.

Logies Hair Review-not much to see here

I didn't watch the illustrious Logies ceremony on Monday, but Mel did and she called me in a few times to have a look at hair and fashion winner.s and losers. On the whole, I was pretty pleased to see that the dead-straight blowdry look is on the way out. There was a lot of natural, loose-looking curls and soft upstyles which are flattering on just about anybody. There were no crazy, out-there styles which is a bit of a letdown but here are my three favourites:

Natalie Bassingthwaite:Simple, classy, not overdone. This is a style that probably took time and effort for the event, but would be pretty to do at home.

Dannii Minogue: Ther is no arguing about how good her hair looked. Short, sharp, modern bob. Strong colour. She is the perfect example of how a great haircut can make your look. My choice for best hair.

Ruby Rose: It was hard to find a good shot of her hair, but it's a short funky cut that has been styled just slightly to add texture. Short hair goes formal! We love Ruby.

O&M Hairdressing Training in Sydney

We are lucky enough to be in O&Ms Creative team, and last night we hosted a training evening here at Stevie English Hair in Sydney. We had some of the top salons, and it was a little bit of a squash in the shop, but loads of fun.
We were asked to do a presentation on Powder lighteners and upcoming colour and cut trends. the evening was a huge success and i would like to thank everybody who came, and to my girls that helped and worked tirelessly. Original thinking is the concept, and that's what we are all about.

O&M Best New Product!

Well this is big news! On Monday night I went to the Australian Hairdressing Awards with Kirsty, from the shop. Al, Jose and Marylin from O&M, our wonderful product company. They had been nominated in the Best New product category, And best Packaging. We all went along with no expectations other than to have a good time.

But.......they won! I can honestly say we were all so surprised, most of all Alan and Jose. O&M is a relatively new company and they were up against the industry big guns. The product, Seven Day Miracle, is fantastic, but we did not expect to win AT ALL.

So after we all recovered, we partied! I really believe in O&M, their products and their philosophy, and Al and Jose are great mates of mine and of the salon. It was so cool to see them get some recognition for all their hard work. Congratulations O&M!!

I have been so impressed with Tiaki. My abs are a lot flatter, I'm loads more flexible and my surfing is improving due to my new, stronger core. I recommend!

Sunday Trading

We have been open for just over 16 months, we are almost too busy. So due to clients not been able to get into the salon we will be opening up on Sundays. I'm working Sundays with Jade who is the newest member of the team. Jade was the Manager from one of Sydney's best salons, coming with a pedigree of hairdressing which leaves me very excited about the future!
We are also in the middle of a few little renovations. The new look courtyard which will offer us a little more, and much needed extra space. I cant wait. I'm not sure of completion time as of yet, but watch this space.

Male Pattern Balding

No one wants to lose their hair. Hair is such an important part of our wardrobe. If your hair is not right you don't feel right. So when it happens to men it can be a real problem for them. Not everybody looks great with a bald head, not everybody has the face or head shape to completely pull it off. Of course Bruce Willis and the likes kill it but not everybody feels comfortable with their baldness. Now I'm a believer in confidence, and I always knew I would lose my hair. My grandfather's hair was very thin, my father is bald(sorry dad but its true). So I have always figured I would lose mine. And a really good mate of mine told me that when I was surfing he could always see my bald spot as I was cruising along waves- you can always count on your mates!

According to Andrology Australia, "the majority of Australian men will experience some form of hair loss in their lifetime. For men between the ages of 20 and 45 who start to lose scalp hair, there is a 95 per cent chance they are experiencing male pattern hair loss." So it's official, I'm going bald.

Three months ago one my clients told me that he was taking a drug called "Poscar". Now this drug is used in the treatment of prostate cancer,and one of the side affects was hair growing back. Apparently hair grows back with constant use up to 7 years, that means I would have the full head of hair of 26 year old, well at least the head of hair I had when i was 26. I have been taking 1/4 of a tablet a day. I think for the treatment of prostate cancer you take 2, so the dose I'm taking is very weak. Of course I asked the doctor about side effects. His answer was, "Anytime you take drugs there are side effects, but with this drug its pretty minimal". I have not had any,except my hair is growing back and getting thicker. Kirsty who cuts my hair in the salon reckons it is, and my wife is in agreement. And I think it feels thicker. So I am three months into trialling "Pos car" and I'm going to get another lot tomorrow. It costs about $70 for three months. I have heard that centres for hair loss charge a small fortune.

I would not say I am a vain man, but I am a hairdresser and I work in an industry based on appearance. I was fine with my hair loss, but when I heard that it could be stopped, I jumped at the chance. What man wouldn't want the opportunity to get his hair back?

I just wanted to share my experience, and I will post another pic of my diminishing baldness in another 3 months.

"When deciding what's right for you they should ask you about your job, your wardrobe and your routine." If they don't ask tell them. For instance, if you prefer to just shower and go in the mornings you don't want a cut that's takes a lot of styling. "I like someone who;s done their research," Corthine says. "Bring in a few pics, and tell me what you don't like as well as what you do." Honesty and communication are key, on both sides. And remember that ultimately, its in your hairdressers favour to do a good job on your hair as well. " That's my work walking out the door," Corthine quips.>
Some of the work that walks out our door is some of the best around. I am very proud of my team and the standard of work that we maintain. We rock!

Another great week at the English, Verity was prepping hair for "So You Think You Can Dance" the salon was pumping. We are really lucky to get a nice mix of great clients and then get asked now and then to help on some cool shows. As soon as I have pics I will post.
We have a great relationship with lots of dancers and its always nice to help them out. While some of the team were prepping hair, the rest of us were at Waverley Bowls having a cool team bonding afternoon. Think the team was more into drinking than bowls. But it was a lot of fun.

2009 Oscars Looks

I am sure you have all seen countless images of Oscar dresses, winners, and losers, but I just wanted to comment on my favourite hairstyles from this year's awards.

Sarah Jessica Parkers's colour looks amazing. It looks natural, the regrowth isn't visible because the lighter colour is underneath and the hair looks healthy and gorgeous. It is a great low-maintenance colour and a great look for autumn.

Jennifer Aniston always has great hair, and this year was no exception. Her lovely honey blonde colour suits her skin tone,and the casual blowdry-with-Bohemian braid looks done but not overdone. Her stylist must get paid very well ;)

My two favourite long-and-curly styles worn by Alicia Keys and Amanda Seyfried. Alicia's hair looks gorgeous and healthy (she must use O&M colour!) and glamourous. Amanda'a lovely natural blonde colour also looks great, and the smooth loose curls look easy and pretty.

This lady, Taraji Henson, is rocking the hell out or a sharp razored bob and a great blowdry. Not fussy, just well-groomed and very cool.

Kate Winslet definitely looks like an Oscar winner here. It's a classic upstyle with a bit of a modern twist. The super-sculpted look really suits

I don't normally comment on bad hairstyles BUT.... Jessica Biel here is a beautiful young lady at the ACADEMY AWARDS and she has what looks like dirty hair tied up in a half-hearted attempt at a style. I just think a shampoo and blowdry could have helped. You're still hot Jessica.

The New O&M Website

Well, I'm back in the salon after a pretty great holiday on the Sunshine Coast, QLD. Lots of surfing, sunshine and general relaxing and good times. I admit that I was nervous about leaving the salon for the first time but the girls have proven that I was worried for nothing. They had a great week and I feel very lucky to have such brilliant colleagues. You can't put a price on their value-thanks girls!

The First Salon In Australia

We are the first salon in Australia to have the new colour lock Irons. We are actully the first concept salon in Australia who has become T3.
T3 is a company who has taken the styling irons to new levels, they have changed the way we will be doing hair. Their Irons Technology supersedes any other iron, the technology is three years more advanced than their closest rival.
They have also superseded the hair dryer, a hairdryer that with constant use the condition of the hair will get better and better, it doesn't blast the hair, it uses patented tourmaline infusion technology, which drys the hair using infrared. Leaving the hair less damaged and well conditioned. Also because of the technology they use less energy which means less carbon credits.

This week I was lucky enough to be asked by O&M to talk about the future and product development, to help out with education and to give my ideas about coming trends. I feel really privileged to be asked and it's really nice to work with a GREAT haircare company that cares about the hair and the environment, two things that I'm passionate about.
We have had another great week! We were also involved in a little mens' shoot, Jake who works here did the hair and the modeling, and we all think it was pretty cool. Simi styled and rocked this shoot out! We love your work Simi.

The Paint Job

For a long time Stevie English Hair has had a pretty interesting colour job. When we moved in we only painted the bottom half, and then there was this god awful yellow at the top. So this weekend my stellar crew of my father, brother and myself fixed it! A huge Thank you to my Dad and bro, and amazingly no real arguments. It was a lot of fun ,although I will be perfectly happy if I never see a paintbrush again. It's very different from painting hair, and I'm pleased to say I'm a lot better at my real job.

A new year resolution

First week back-a new year. A time to make resolutions, a time for me to better myself and the business. What would I change from last year? What does Stevie English Hair want from the upcoming year? Last year was amazing, and I wouldn't change a single thing. But what can we do better this year? We recycle everything, well almost, a worm farm is coming. I would like to get a bit more involved in the Glebe community, I really love this area and how we have fit in here.
We are going to open "Alfresco Hairdressing" in our courtyard, hopefully in February. Later in the year we are going to open the Academy. (top secret i have said too much)
Our goals for the year:

Have Fun
Open the courtyard up
Open the academy
To be Talked about a little bit more
Have fun
To create trends not follow them
To grow as a team
To be involved in the Glebe community
Have more fun

Our clients come first, and anything else comes second. I'm putting goals up so we have not forgotten them by Australia Day. I feel really good about this year!

We worked on Sydney, and Melbourne fashion weeks, doing such labels as Gorman, Ginger and Smart, Finetti, White Suede, Antipodean, Camilla Frank, Nicholas Molli and many more!

Wow! What a year, and I'm sure there are things I have forgotten. 2008 has been a great year. The team has grown, our client base has grown. I am so happy with life here at the English, and its really down to the team around me, from my family, to the girls at work and my friends. To everybody who has supported us this year THANK YOU . Too Busy to Blog

Well its been more than a week since I last blogged, the reason is we have been so busy. The team and I have been working some serious hours. The Christmas Cheer is in the air. Four more days till Christmas. We have had our two biggest weeks ever at the English, and we are all really looking forward to having a break. Verity is off to New Zealand for the holidays and will not be in the salon till the 7th of Jan Zoe is off from Christmas eve and will be back on the 6th of Jan. Movie In The Salon

So we had an Australian Movie , shooting some scenes in the salon. It was amazing to watch, these actors turning it on. It was a lot of fun, i got to do the hair and gave the actor who was playing a hairdresser a few tips. Think he camped it up a little bit, or maybe im camp?

I have just finished shooting a vodafone advert ,no im not giving up my day job, and im not expecting any job offers. I'm lucky enough to be given a car from Vodafone, and to be asked to be in one of their commercials is really cool. We filmed most of it here in the salon, and some of me driving. So super cool advertising for Stevie English Hair.
This monday we have an Australian feature film been filmed in the salon, only a few sceens but should be fun and interesting. And again some good advertising for us here at the English.

The Party Season

Christmas draws closer, the weather warms right up, and people in Sydney are partying! We at the English have had another great week, and today is our first ever Sunday trading.
Christmas party is on a roll, and tonight is the night. Im sorry if anyone see's any of us tonight, you might get sense out of some of us, but you might not! We have had a wonderful year and the we are going to let down our hair.

The first year is the hardest, thats what everybody has said. We started with Kirsty and myself, now there is eight.
The party was a success, hairdressers love a party and the crew here are happy to party, so if their were no guests we would have fun, but as 150 to 200 people turned up over the course of the evening, a lot of fun was had. Im sure there was some sore heads after some cheap champagne and lots of Pimms. Im not putting any really messy photos, of which i have quite alot. To all of those that came out thank you. To everybody that has suppoerted Stevie English Hair over the last year thank you.

Pushplay At The Paddinton Inn

Yesterday Miss V, Zoe and Jake along with Adrian Alston and the crew from Pushplay put on an amazing show up at the Paddington Inn. We had a shoot going on whilst their were dancers models, Brazilian samba drums, artists.
The girls ran denim in the hair of everyone to tie in with the denim brief. Yhe Paddo Inn was going off. A lot of fun was had by all. Thanks to Tiger beer for sponsoring it. Also Oyster T.v. and Mag were there. So watch out for the editorial.

Pushplay And The Paddington Inn

On Wednesday evening at the Paddington Inn There is going to be a a super fly event. www.Pushplay.com.au Are putting on Live dancers, performers its an Art instillation. Stevie English Hair is doing the all the hair, i wont give too much away but we are using denim off cuts from the boys. We are also having a live photoshoot going on. Its going to be a great night, cheap Tiger beers, male and female models, what more do we want. Also the chance to re-cycle your old jeans, bring in an the old denim that you don't wear, and Pushplay will give you a $50 dollar credit to buy a cool new pair of pushplay jeans! Alright.
Tiger beer, cool jeans, dancers, models very coooooooooool hair sounds like fun! see you there!

Chamboard Shine Awards

I have a little late post this week. Stevie English has had another great week. We were asked to do hair for the Chamboard Shine Awards. We had a new member join the team and at last another boy in the place, so welcome Jake. And one of our busiest weeks ever in the salon. Thats my excuse for the late post.
The Chamboard Shine Awards were held at W hotel in Woolloomooloo Their were ten designers all up and coming, they had one model each to create one look. We worked with them closely to help perfect their vision. A few pics of the team back stage. The final pics will be going up on the gallerys on the salon website, not long till that is finished off. Yipee.

Musical Chairs

Christmas draws nearer, and we ran out of chairs for the first time today. Its a problem we hoped to have! And its happened quicker. The new basin came this week, and will be plumbed in on Tuesday. We now have three. The English is growing in furniture and reputation. We came, we saw, we are conquered. Well almost and we are enjoying doing things our way.
Glebe street fair tomorrow, so all clients are welcome to come in for coffee, and and if you are new to the salon ,fancy having a coffee, please come check us out.

New Products From O&M

Christmas is around the corner, and we at the English are going off. This is the busiest time of year in the salon, so if you are thinking about making an appointment before your holiday - do it now!
We have had some new stock arrive, the new styling products from O&M and the Christmas packs from them (which not only look hot but are great too) and the travel packs from Kevin Murphy. Great presents, and also great to keep your hair in shape over the holiday period.

Fancy New Floor

So this long weekend for us hairdressers, i had floor experts from Abacus floors www.abacusflooring.com.au come in and give us a face lift. Looooooooooook at our shiny floors. Wow how nice. We dont even need to use mirrors anymore.

Melbourne Cup

So every first Tuesday in November, all hairdressers love. Its Hairdressers picnic. We love a party so the girls and i went out for brunch before going off to the races at Randwick. It started well and ended reasonably messy, some worse than others, no naming i dont tell secrets, what happens on cup day stays on cup day, but you could ask Kirsty?

New Floors

If you happen to walk past the salon this weekend, you will either see workmen or that it looks empty. We are having the floor re-sanded and stained.(eco of course)
We are not in till Wednesday, when Kirsty is back, yerh! We are out partying on Melbourne cup day which should be fun, watch this space for some messy pictures.

Zoe and I were up bright up and early yesterday morning for the launch of the new Seafolly swimwear collection www.seafolly.com
It was held at Neilson Park, beautiful spot, not a beautiful morning, not the kind of morning for girls to be wearing bikini's, but oh well. The Hair breif was really soft
curls, beachie as you would expect from a swimwear brand.

Amore Hair Extensions

We have been in the salon all day training Amore hair extensions, you will notice over the next couple of weeks that the girls hair is getting longer, the joys of having the best hair extension system in the world. Jade from Amore hair has been with us. What fun! long hair with out the wait.

Road Works

Glebe Point Road and its continuing face lift, Yep its still on going. We are getting closer though and the handy work guys tell me it will all be finished for the 16th November. The Meters are not working at the moment on Glebe Point road near the shop, so go for a rock star park!
Glebe Street Fair is on the 16 th we will be having some sort of party yet to be finalized but im sure it will involve loads of alcohol and maybe a sausage or two. The Party will be our one year anniversary.

A Big Wonderful Week

Last week was one of our best. We had two new Staff join our team. Zoe who is our junior Stylist and then Saundrea who is here on Saturdays, The place is buzzing now. We had another shoot this weekend, just to finish off Georgie's collection. Really excited to see the finished product.
Kirsty is on Holiday, which will be very different. Kirsty has been here since day one, so not to have her for a few weeks will be strange. And if you want to have an appointment with her I would book in now as she is busy already!!
